Denver, CO – The Montbello Warriors used a strong defense and a 21 point 3rd quarter to sink the Kennedy Commanders 48-37 Friday night at Montbello High School. The game itself was an offensive struggle with both intense defenses causing turnovers and charge calls leading to at least 35 fouls called in the game allowing neither team to get into much of an offensive flow.
It was tied at the end of the 1st quarter 9-9 with neither team getting into an offensive rhythm. The Commanders got some traction on the offensive end when they started pressing the Warriors in the 2nd quarter. The Warriors made poor passes and the Commanders took advantage. The Commanders were able to score 16 points in the quarter while holding the Warriors to just seven. The Commanders went into the locker room at halftime leading 25-16.
The Warriors quickly made up the difference in the 3rd quarter by turning the tables on the Commanders. After the Warriors scored they would set up their own full court press testing the Commanders. The Commanders did not handle the pressure well. The Warriors were so effective on defense in the 3rd quarter that the Commanders only scored 2 points in the quarter. The press lead to instant offense for the Warriors who scored 21 points in the quarter. Sophomore Troy Green lead the Warriors in the 3rd quarter with 10 points.
The Warriors started the 4th quarter with a 37-27 lead but the feisty Commanders cut lead to 39-32 but were unable to get any closer. The Warriors outscored the Commanders 11-10 in the final quarter, giving the Warriors the 48-37 victory.
Senior Alex Coleman led the Commanders with 14 points while the Warriors were led in scoring by Green with 15 points and senior A.J. Hayes added 12.
