Aurora, CO – The #1 Regis Jesuit Raiders used a stingy defense and blistering second half shooting to get the victory over the #5 Rangeview Raiders 78 -50 Friday night at Rangeview High School. In the early going of the game both teams had trouble holding on to the ball and play was a out of sync. As the teams settled in to the pace of the game, Regis was able to string together scoring spurts while Rangeview struggled to make jumpers and failed to get offensive rebounds. Regis held a 17-10 lead at the end of the first quarter with help from senior guard Nolan Ebel’s 4 point play.
Rangeview started the second quarter of with a back door alley oopp to Senior wing Jalen Davis. However, that only seemed to spark Regis. As Regis went on a 8-2 run over the next six minutes of the game. Regis always seemed to find a way to get the loose ball or grab the defensive rebound leaving Rangeview with numerous one and done trips on offense. The 8-2 run was sparked by back to back 3’s by Tony Caseria. Rangeview got a number of shot attempts but simply could not get them to fall. Regis senior forward Elijah Sandford scored the last two points of the quarter giving Regis a 31-19 lead at halftime.
Regis then started the second half on a 9 -2 run, making 3 straight three’s two of which were by senior guard Bryan Staerkel. Regis went on to make five more three pointers in the 31 point third quarter. It seemed as if Regis simply could not miss a shot in the 3rd quarter. Rangeview was able to score 21 points in the quarter lead by eight points from forward Tarren Story-Way but they could not slow down the Regis machine. At one point Regis had built up a 25 point lead with their balanced scoring attack in the third quarter but lost a bit of focus towards the end of the quarter and Rangeview to cut the lead to 18 after a Tyrei Randall 3 pointer but Ebels answered with a 3 pointer of his own to put Regis back up 62-41 a the end of the quarter.
The game was pretty much on cruise control for Regis during the 4th quarter as Rangeview was unable to gain any steam on offensee and could not string stops together on defense. With two minutes left after a Boryla three pointer pushed the lead to 73-45 both Regis and rangewview too k the starters out and allowed the bench players to finish the game.
