Rangeview Repels Regis Late Charge
In their first game being ranked #1, Rangeview traveled to Guy Gibbs Gym on the Regis Jesuit campus Tuesday night and had to hold of a late charge by Regis to win 60-52. It took a few minutes for Rangeview to get going offensively but defensively they were on point from the jump.
Regis started out on a 6-1 run after three pointers by junior guard Connor Hobbs and senior guard Michael Wambsganss. Rangeview had multiple attempts at open three’s and lay ups but those shots would not fall. Despite not scoring more than four points in the first four minutes of play Rangeview focused on playing defense. Their half court man to man was excellent causing Regis to uncharacteristically turn the ball over multiple time in the first and second quarters. Rangeview also out worked Regis in the paint and limited Regis to multiple one shot trips. Scoring picked up in the last four minutes of the quarter for both teams but it was Rangeview that finished on a 12-6 run ignited by junior guard Elijah Blake. He started the run with a three pointer and ended it with this three pointer at the end of the quarter to give Rangeview 18-14 lead.
The second quarter stared off rough for Regis as senior forward Geoff Kelly picked up his third foul just moments into the quarter. As he went to the bench Regis stalled even though senior forward Marc Reininger played well in the post and was able to score most of the night, Regis failed to advantage of him in the post. Meanwhile it was Rangeview was starting to hit on all cylinders as multiple players were having an impact on the game. It was a great pass from senior guard senior guard Jalen Guidry to Elijah Reed that put Rangeview up 10. Then Kris Hollins got an important put back that put the Raiders up 11 with 2:35 left in the quarter. Blake and senior guard Tyrei Randall combined for six points in the last two minutes to give Rangeview a 34-23 lead at halftime.
It was a rough start of the second half for both teams. Neither team could make a bucket in the first three minutes of the quarter. The only points were from Regis’s Hobbs who made two free throws. Regis started the half with a 1-3-1 zone to throw off the dribble penetration of Rangeview and it was successful. As Rangeview missed three pointers and Regis grabbed the long rebounds. There was a changed in momentum when a Rangeview player picked up a technical foul it turned out to be a a five point swing for Regis. But again Blake righted the ship for Rangeview to put them back up 10 points and then senior Calvin Collins hit a three pointer to put Rangeview up 13.
The fourth quarter was full of intensity as Regis mounted the charge. Elijah Martinez hit his second three pointer of the night and Reininger followed with an old fashioned three point play to cut Rangeviews lead to 49-43 with five minutes remaining in the game. Then the only thing that Rangeview didn’t do well all night started to catch up with them, missing free throws. Rangeview shot 8 of 18 form the free throw line on the night and made 5 of 13 in the final quarter. But the ones the did make were the important ones. With the score 50-45 after Regis’s Wambsganss made two free throws, Randall found a cutting Reed for a three point play to put the Raiders up 52-45.
The next plays thwarted the Regis comeback.
This play signifies the night that Blake had, he did lot of things very well.
Rangeview looks very much like a team that will make a deep run in the playoffs.
