John Grigsby – The Best Shooter You Haven’t Met

5/23/19

Well, you might know 6’9 John Grigsby if you are a follower of Monarch High School Basketball or the Front Range League or you might have gotten your introduction to him as hit lit up the spring club circuit for the Colorado RoughRiders from beyond the three-point line.

One look at the 2020 forward and one would think that his game is close to the basket and that he does his damage on the block. While he does show some flashes of skill on the block with good footwork and the ability to catch the ball on the block and has the moves on the block, he is much more comfortable facing the basket from 20 feet away. “The best part of my game I would say is my 3 point shooting, ” Grigsby said. He isn’t just a gunner out at the three-point line, he understands the game and knows how to find the open man. ” I also have the ability to draw defenders and kick to open shooters,” mentioned the big fella.

He has had multiple games this spring where he has made over five three-pointers, and we watched as he torched the nets for seven out of eight three-pointers in a half. His shot is simple and he doesn’t need much space to get his shot off. He is very accurate when he has time to get a clean look at the basket. His play this spring has caught the eye of college coaches. “I’m getting interest from a lot of d2 and d3 right now and a few d1s. One is Northern Colorado where my brother (Roy) plays, so I’m very interested in that,” Grigsby said.

The shooter from Monarch is keeping his options open and considering all levels. “Another one I’m interested in is Nebraska Wesleyan they have a really good program,” he said. Grigsby picked up his first offer a couple of weekends ago at the Top of the Rockies. “I’ve got one offer from Park University in Gilbert, Arizona,” the senior to be mentioned.

Grigsby knows that he can’t rest on his success from the spring and wants to help his team be successful. “My goals this summer is just to get better and try to help my team win as many games as possible and compete for some championships on the Prep Hoops Circuit,” he sais

Grigsby is an intriguing prospect and player in the Class of 2020 as there is in Colorado. He has size, is solid on the block on both ends of the floor, and can rebound a bit. At 6’9 he has a good feel for the game and can make the right play but what separates him from the rest is his three-point shot. His three-point shooting borders on elite.

His biggest improvement resides in the weight room. Once his physical skills catch up to his basketball and shooting ability, he will be hard for anyone to guard inside or out.
