Broomfield, CO – A year after winning the 3A State Championship the Holy Family Tigers have advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 4A State Tournament. The Tigers used a 15-2 run that spanned the late first and early second quarters to propel them to a 77-58 mauling of the Elizabeth Cardinals at the Holy Family gym Friday night. The Cardinals, despite having senior Jake Gavitt score 24 points and fellow forward Aaron Stone add 19 points, they really didn’t seem to have an answer for the Tigers point guard Chris Helbig and senior forward Luke Golter.
Golter got going early in the first quarter nailing his first three pointer and going on to score 16 points in the first half. When Golter wasn’t scoring it was Helbigs turn he scored 15 points in the first half with 10 of those coming in the 2nd quarter. His last points cam off a sweet base line out of bounds play that netted Helbig a two hand alley oop dunk just before the half time buzzer. It wasn’t just Helbig and Golter though that was hot on the night the Tigers combined for nine three pointers while Elizabeth only made four.
The Tigers lead by 22 points at half time and maintained a 20-25 point lead form oat of the second half. It wasn’t until the last 2:00 of the game and after the Holy Family regulars had been pulled out of the game did the Cardinals get the Tiger lead below 20 points.
