George Washington Wins 2015 East Summer League Tournament
George Washington won the 2015 East Summer League Tournament with a 69-53 victory over Overland. 2018’s guards Daylen Kountz and Jon’il Fugett led the way for the young Patriot squad. 2017 guard Jervay Green scored nine points to get things going in the first half for GW. Then Fugett scored 14 of his 19 points including back to back three pointers that gave GW a 40-21 half time lead. Overland struggled to get much to fall in the first half and playing a third game in three hours took its toll defensively.
Kountz scored a game high 21 points with 15 of those coming in the second half and most coming in the first five minutes of the half that salted the game away. Despite 18 points from 2016 G Reggie Gibson Overland could never get it going.
GW tangled with Rangeview in the semi- finals. It was a close game through out the first half but things changed a few minutes into the second half. With the score tied at 32 Kountz scored on back to back possessions. Then Fugett was fouled on a three point shot. A Rangeview player said something to the ref which drew a technical foul. Fugett went 4 of 5 from the free throw line and then scored on the ensuing possession for a 6 point swing. 2016 6’5 guard Tyrei Randall scored 11 points for Rangeview after the play and 2017 guard Matt Johnson added two deep three’s to help bring the Raiders back. Rangeview was able to cut the score to 54-53 with less than 10 seconds left. But this play by Ro Lewis sealed the victory for GW .
Overland got to the final by defeating Thomas Jefferson and Cherokee Trail.
One interesting fact about the East Summer League in the last five years the team that won the tournament has finished no worse than in the sweet 16 of the 5A state tournament.
