George Washington Gets Past ThunderRidge

George Washington Gets Past ThunderRidge

3/10/17

Denver, CO – The Patriots were cruising to what appeared to be a birth in the finals in the first 5A semifinal game of the night at the Denver Coliseum.  The Patriots had just extended their 10 point halftime lead to 44-28 over the ThunderRidge Grizzlies and the momentum was clearly on GW’s side.   But then the Grizzlies switched defenses and Patriot senior point guard Calvin Fugett found himself on the bench in foul trouble.

It was a drastic change for the Patriots. George Washington was firing on all cylinders in the first half.    Jon’il Fugett was hitting from 3-point land and Shawn’trell White was taking full of advantage of being left open and scored 10 points in the second quarter. On defense, the Patriots didn’t allow hardly anyone other than junior guard Kaison Hammonds to score. Not that Hammonds was “allowed” to score he had to earn every one of his 13 first half points.

However, after the quick start to the third quarter, the wheels started to come off for the Patriots. ThunderRidges half court trap slowed down the Patriots to the point where they stopped attacking the basket and settling for dangerous cross-court passes that resulted in five straight trips with no points.   In the mean time Calvin Fugett picked up his fourth foul and went to the bench. As GW struggled with its passing and ballhandling, ThunderRidge took full advantage and went straight to the basket. Two 3-pointers by Ryan Holt along with Hammonds adding another eight points in the quarter cut the GW lead to five points by the end of the third quarter.  That wasn’t the worst of it for the Patriots as Calvin Fugett was put back into the game with less than 30 seconds left int eh quarter and was called for a loose ball foul with 4 seconds before the quarter buzzer  rang.

The fourth quarter was epic. Three ties and two lead changes doesn’t do the level of intensity justice in the final quarter. It was evident that this game wouldn’t be settled until the final moments. Tre Pierce had been playing well all game he had a number of dunks and had already blocked a couple of shots but it was this sequences that changed the game for the Patriots.

Then with the Patriots up one, they ran this back side lob against the ThunderRidge zone to go up 3. Jervay Green was clutch in the final quarter from the free throw line hitting 5 of 6 attempts
