Westminster, CO- The Knights of Denver Science and Technology stormed into The Academy’s gymnasium Friday night, starting the game with 3 steals and 8 points in the first sixty seconds of the game. The Knights gained the early momentum and did not end the frenetic siege until the final buzzer, winning going away, 84-53.
The Knights played at a break neck speed, attacking the Wildcat’s press and zone defenses. Knight guards Eisley Black, Alexander Neal, and Braylan Davis knifed their way through the defense to score at the rim or to dish off to fellow teammates Dwight Pullen and Davis Carter for easy assists in the lane. The Academy attempted a counter attack behind senior and leading scorer Zach Telles. While Telles was able to score 18 points in the game, he was held in check for much of the first half. When Telles was able to get free of the quick Knight defenders, he was able to knock down open three pointers, keeping the Wildcats in the game during the first half. Meanwhile, the Knights were relentless in their offensive attack, going as fast as possible while staying pretty much under control.
The story of the night though was the Knights’ defense. The faster Knight guards where able to cause turnover after turnover. Whether it was by jumping the lanes to pick off passes or using their quick hands to steal the ball from the Wildcat guards, each steal contributed to the Knights’ fast break points. The Wildcats had no answer inside for the Knights 6’4 Pullen and 7’0 Davis who dominated the boards; Davis grabbed 17 rebounds and had nearly double figures in block shots, and Pullen grabbed 8 rebounds as well.
The second half started off much like the first with The Knights jumping the passing lanes and causing turnovers leading to a 25-point quarter and extending their lead to 30 points. The Academy did not back down from the Knights and competed the entire second half. The Wildcats’ Telles scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half, but no other Wildcat was able to get much going offensively.
The Knights had four players in double figures: Neal 18, Pullen 16, Davis 15, and Black 13. The Wildcats had three players in double figures: Anthony Ramirez 11, Devan Caswell 14, and Zach Telles who led with 18 points.
With the win, the Knights have taken possession of second place in Class 3A’s Frontier League.
