Dombro’s Free Throws Help Grandview Advance to Final 4 with 59-53 Win
By Jon Miller
Denver, CO – Grandview’s Levi Dombro proved that free throws can make or break a team. Dombro came off the bench and scored 5 points, but his points were at the end of the game when the Wolves needed them most. Three times in the final minutes of Saturdays game, Dombro was fouled by the Chaparral Wolverines. At the time, the Wolves led by 4 and Dombro’s free throws could keep the Wolves ahead by two possessions or miss and give the Wolverines a chance to make it a one possession game.
The junior guard did not flinch. Twice he hit both of his free throws to keep the Wolves in front by 6. When he missed his 6th and final free throw, the Wolves held a 58-53 lead, time was on their side and the Wolverines did not respond.
“I was just thinking, “make it” to myself. I know my team needed those free throws and try not to think too much.” Dombro said.
Dombro was not the only one from Grandview that played a key role off the bench. When three-point catalyst Ben Boone found himself in foul trouble, Tyler Unger filled in. Unger hit two key three pointers, the first one to give the Wolves the 32-30 lead and the other to extend the lead to 38-31 in the third.
“First half I struggled a little bit, but my team helped me stay confident and when I went in I just shot it like I would shoot any other shot with confidence.” Unger said of his night.
Grandview needed all hands on deck because Ronnie DeGray III and Kobe Sanders made sure the Wolverines stayed within striking distance.
The pair combined for 29 of Chaparrals final 33 points in the loss.
“We didn’t want them to get off their threes They spread the floor well when they have both shooters out there, so we really concentrated on that. They caught us a few times out of sorts but for the most part, we stayed composed and fought through adversity.” Grandview coach Michael Rogers said.
Grandview held the Wolverines to 4 of 12 shooting from beyond the arc but still needed help from its bench.
Grandview starters Primm, Boone, and Gunner Gentry found themselves in foul trouble and the bench picked them up.
“I have faith in my team and at the end of the day we came away with the win and that is what we wanted.” Primm stated about picking up his fourth foul late in the game.
Dombro, Unger, and Davon Walker came off the bench and combined for 23 points in the win.
“Just play.” Grandview coach Rogers said of his subs. “We don’t have time to turn around and say woe is me. We got to play, and they were able to do that.”
Grandview was led by Dayne Primms 16 points. Tyler Unger added 10.
The Wolves will play ThunderRidge in Fridays Final Four.
Ronnie DeGray III led the Wolverines with 22 points and Kobe Sanders added 15.
Chaparral ended its season at 21-5.
