Henderson, CO – The Monarch Coyotes defeated the Mountain Range Mustangs 43-40 in the finals of the Prairie View Hoopsfest Saturday afternoon at Prairie View High School. The Coyotes held a 31-16 lead at halftime behind the one-two punch of Sam Fredricksmeyer and Mac Rowen. However in the second half Monarch was only able to scratch out 12 points against a tough Mustang defense headed by senior guard Ben Egan and an offense that was not looking to score. Monarch controlled the ball for big chunks of time during the 3rd and 4th quarters only shooting when they had to. Mountain Range worked tirelessly on defense chasing and following the Coyotes around and very rarely breaking down.
Mountain Ranges shots finally started to fall in the 4th quarter and exploded for a 20 point quarter capitalizing on rare Monarch turnovers. Stephen Hoban scored all four of Monarch’s points in the final quarter with lay ups. The Mustangs mad charge was led by James Potter’s 8 points most of which cam win the final minutes of the game. With Monarch refusing to score in the final minute, the Mustangs waited to foul and was able to turnover the Coyotes and capitalize on the offensive end. The Mountain Range finally had to foul and eventually put Monarch at the line with less than 11 seconds left in the game. The Coyotes missed the from end of the one and one which set up a last chance three pointer for the Mustangs that failed to drop.
