Davis Powers Overland to 3rd Final 4
Overland lead wire to wire at the Denver Coliseum Saturday evening, defeating the Doherty Spartans 69-50. The 19 point win sends Overland to the Final 4 for the third straight year. The defending state champs were led by senior forward DeRon Davis. The 6’10 power forward was 10/12 from the field including two monster dunks that took away any type of momentum Doherty may have worked up.
Overland used a 9-1 run at the beginning of the game on it’s way to a 20 point quarter. Davis scored nine points in the quarter and another six points was scored by senior guard Jervae Robinson. Doherty got little going as the Overland defense dogged Doherty guards senior Dalven Brushier and Brevin Brimble all over the floor. Both guards had to take low percentage tough shots all night. Brimble was able to shake free on an occasion for an open three pointer but those were few and far between .
Senior Padiet Wang scored eight points in the second quarter as the Trailblazers outscore the Spartans once again. Wang was able to get to the rim finish while Davis added another five points in the quarter this time knowing down a nice looking three pointer. The Trailblazers defense was excellent again giving up only 12 points in the quarter. Brimble was able to knock down a pair of rare open three’s for the Spartans. The Trailblazers led 37-24 at halftime.
Overland’s defense held the Spartans to nine points in the third quarter and held the Spartans leading scorer scoreless. Davis had two devastating dunks in the quarter on his way to six points in the quarter. Robinson was also very good all night long on both ends of floor playing excellent defense and very efficient from the floor. Overland led 51-33 at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter Overland maintained the status quo and built a 20 point lead in the quarter. Doherty was able to put a few more points up on the board but Overland had dialed down the defense just a notch as the shots Doherty did make were still contested. Davis ended with 24 points and 10 rebounds in perhaps his most dominating game of the season.
Overland will play at 8:30 Friday night against Chatfield in the Coors Events Center on the University of Colorado campus.
