Basketball Colorado’s 5A Top 10 – Week of 1/11/2015
The roller coaster of the 5A season has left the station. Which teams can make it through the loop the loop of league play unscathed while dogging the double barrel corkscrews of sensational scoring performances. Get on board if you dare, it’s going to be a ride like no other.
10. Denver East (5-6) – Denver East has yet to play a game full strength this year and has only played four games so far with senior point guard Brian Carey. Carey is averaging 37 ppg and scored 44 points in a win over ThunderRidge and 46 in a loss in double OT to Chaparral. East will finally be full strength when junior guard Jack Buckmelter becomes eligible after sitting out due to transfer rules. East will get a chance to prove it’s worth on 1/20 versus #1 Regis Jesuit. This week they travel to Chatfield on 1/12.
10. Eaglecrest (7-3) – The Raptors have a core of 4 really good players: The Ross brothers, Avdili and Anderson. They proved they can beat Overland and are our favorites to win the hotly contested Centennial League. This week they host Arapahoe on 1/14 and then visit Cherry Creek on 1/16.
9. Chaparral (8-3) – Roller coaster week for the Wolverines. Lost to Overland in a hard fought game, two days later a key reserve leaves the team, then defeat Denver East in a double overtime thriller finishing the game with just four players on the court. Holtzmann, Moody and Coons have been carrying this team. In order for Chaparral to make a run at the league crown and deep run into plays they will need to get help from the others. Chap travels to Liberty 1/15 and George Washington 1/17.
8. Overland (6-5) – Beat Chaparral with power forward Deron Davis but then lost to Eaglecrest without Davis. The Trialblazers have the bullseye on their backs and will get each league opponent’s best shot. With or without Davis Overland will need to be focused each night out. Trailblazers host Smoky Hill on 1/14 and Arapahoe 1/16.
7. Legend (9-3) – Legend is on a 7 game winning streak entering Continental League play. The young Titans will get a test at Mountain Vista on 1/16.
6. Monarch (10-1) – The big question for Monarch is can they, will they, or are they able to score points against the better teams in the state. In their games versus 5A teams with .500 records or better the Coyotes are averaging 47.3 ppg. On the flip side can Monarch’s defense continue to hold those same teams to 42.3 ppg. Monarch goes to Fossil Ridge 1/13 and hosts Poudre on 1/16
5. Rock Canyon (10-3) – At full strength the Jaguars have only one instate loss. Rock Canyon has one of the premiere back courts in the state which will be tested during league play. Host Douglas County 1/16.
4. Warriors (9-1) – The Warriors will prove if they are the fourth ranked team in 5A or not this week with a brutal Mountain Vista (Monday 1/12), @ Regis Jesuit (Tuesday 1/13) , @ Longmont (Saturday 1/17) schedule this week.
3. ThunderRidge (11-1) – It took a 44 point scoring performance to deal the Grizzlies their first lost. TR has arguably the best front line in the state that does not have DeRon Davis, the question remains how will the Grizzly guards handle more athletic guards. TR travels to Pine Creek 1/13 and then to Heritage 1/16.
2. Dakota Ridge (11-0) – So far the second best team in the state and have pulled out a couple nail bitting victories. The Eagles haven’t played the strongest non league schedule but it was by far not the weakest. Eagles travel to Columbine 1/14 then fly to Chatfield 1/16.
1. Regis Jesuit (10-0) – The best “team” state, with skill at every position,9 seniors that trust each other and a hall of fame coach. The Raiders have been simply rolling teams in the non conference portion of their schedule. A busy week awaits for the Raiders: 1/13 host the Warriors, 1/16 travel to Fossil Ridge, 1/17 play at Castle View.
