Basketball Colorado Top10 Week of January 8, 2017
1/8/2017
What a first week of 2017 it was for Basketball Colorado’s 5A Top10 teams. Half of the Top10 lost last week including then #1 George Washington. The second week of 2017 could be just as volatile with Centennial League play in full swing, and ThunderRidge and Regis are playing on Saturday.
There is also a hand full of teams that are hovering around the Top10 such as Mountian Range, Columbine, Legacy, Denver South, and Regis Jesuit could make the biggest jump as they get their big guys.
10. Doherty (7-3)
The Spartans gave Chatfield their closest game since the Chargers lost to Eaglecrest at the beginning of the season. Pine Creek and Plamer await this week as Doherty dives into league play.
9. Cherry Creek (10-1)
The Bruins continue their great play so far this season. They will play upset-minded Mullen and then always tough Arapahoe.
8. Smoky Hill (8-3)
The Buffaloes lost to Grandview last week and face Overland and Mullen this week.
7. Grandview (10-1)
Grandview looks to bounce back from the Wolves first loss against Cherokee Trail on Wednesday. Both teams have been bitten by the injury bug and may not be full strength. The Eaglecrest Raptors and Coleby Ross await at the end of the week.
6. Rock Canyon (10-2)
Yes, Rock Canyon did have the biggest drop in the rankings. Yes, RC beat Eaglecrest earlier in the season. However, Eaglecrest hasn’t only one in-state loss and hasn’t gone to overtime. The Jaguars avoided two losses last week by defeating Rangeview in overtime. The Jaguars face Columbine on Monday in their final game before league play starts next week.
5. Chatfield (9-1)
Chatfield has been blitzing Colorado teams the latest was rival Lakewood. The Chargers take Arvada West this week.
4. Eaglecrest (8-2)
Eaglecrest faces Arapahoe who beat previously undefeated Grandview and then faces # 6 Grandview.
3. George Washington (10-2)
GW begins a tough portion of their schedule with games against a very tough Chaparral team and Rangeview who can hang with anyone.
2. Denver East (9-3)
Yes, the Angels can make a strong and similar argument to being the #1 team in the state that ThunderRidge can.
The Angels are full strength and take on former Top10 team Lakewood in their only game of the week.
1. ThunderRidge (11-1)
ThunderRidge is this weeks #1 team because the Grizzlies went on the road and beat George Washington. While the Grizzlies have had a few close games in the state, they still haven’t been beaten by a Colorado high school team. ThunderRidge remains on the road with games at Palmer and then to Regis which could jump into the Top10 very soon.
