Basketball Colorado 5A Top10 – Week 4
This will be the last 5A Top10 rankings posted for 2016. It has already been a fantastic start to the 2016-17 season. Buzzer beaters, upsets, and record-setting performances highlight the beginning of the season. 2017 promises to be just as exciting with a number of impact players becoming eligible to play including a couple for some state title contenders after the start of the New Year.
10. Cherokee Trail
The Cougars are coming off a 2-1 week with wins over Legend and Lakewood. The loss came against Regis Jesuit. Cherokee Trail seems like they have been playing to the level of their competition which can be bad against a hard-nosed team like Brighton or good against #4 ThunderRidge who they play on Friday.
9. Doherty (5-1)
The Spartans went 2-0 last week and their game with Legend has been postponed. Tonight they take on Regis at Sparta. It will be an interesting match-up, Regis is lacking an inside presence at the moment but they do have talented young guards like Sam Bannec. Regis has hung with Lakewood and beat Cherokee Trail last week. On the other hand, Brevin Brimble is one of the top scorers in 5A and the Spartans have very capable big men. The Spartans also take on Vista Ridge and Wyoming signee Hunter Maldonado on December 22.
8. Chatfield (5-1)
The Chargers continue to improve and haven’t been close to being challenged since the Eaglecrest game. Run, Layups, 3’s in that order for the Chargers. Players like Joe Miks, Titus Reed, and Lucas St. German flourish in this system.
7. Grandview (8-0)
Grandview plays fFt.Collins for the Gatorade bracket championship this afternoon. The Wolves won’t be sneaking up on anyone this season. A dominant senior lead guard in Lechaun Duhart, one of the best big men in his class Gage Prim, shooters, and role players are a good combination for success.
6. Eaglecrest (6-2)
The Raptors went 3-1 in Vegas by any measure, that is a successful run in Vegas. Colbey Ross was his normal 20 plus 5 plus assist 6 rebound a game self.
5. Smoky Hill (5-2)
Smoky Hill has already eclipsed last season’s win total. See what being healthy can do for a team. The Buffaloes started slow against GW but finished strong. Which is a good sign for a possible rematch in the playoffs.
4. ThunderRidge (8-0)
The Grizzlies continue to impress with a great showing at the Tark Classic. They play Godby from Tallahassee, Florida later today. It will be a good test for ThunderRidge as Godby has talented guards, play fast and a 6’9 post player that can rule the paint. Sound familiar?
3. Rock Canyon (9-1)
The Jaguars only loss was to GW, and now only more game until talented junior guard Tyson Gilbert can take the court.
2. Denver East (8-2)
East didn’t have a spectacular outing against Bingham from Utah. However, the reason East stays at #2 is that East will have played its 11th game of the season by the end of today meaning that Daylen Kountz and Jamison Washington will be ready to go in the Angles first game back after Christmas break.
1. George Washington (8-1)
Despite falling to Lone Peak one of Utah’s best high school teams in the semi-finals of the Tark Classic, it did take overtime for Lone Peak to beat them. Before taking off to Vegas, the Patriots handed Smoky Hill their first in-state loss.
