Basketball Colorado All 5A

Selecting the Basketball Colorado All 5A Team was quite the process. It wasn’t easy narrowing down the list of those deserving recognition to just 12 players. It isn’t easy choosing between the likes of junior guards like Elijah Blake, Jaizec Lottie, Brevin Brimble, Kolton Peterson, Colbey Ross and Braxton Bertolette.

Listed alphabetically by last name

Dalven Brushier 6’2 Sr – Doherty

Brushier had a very good senior campaign and was one of the hardest players to guard out of the Springs this year. Brushier flourished getting into the lane and finishing around the rim. His toughness and aggressiveness to the basket helped make Doherty a Great 8 team.

5A state championship 2016DeRon Davis 6’10 Sr – Overland

Davis simply put was the most dominating force in high school basketball in the state of Colorado when he wanted to be. Davis’ presence in most games caused many players to rethink their shot selection. Davis also ruled the paint on the offensive side as well but would also step out and hit a three. The Indiana signee led the Trailblazers to back to back state titles this year.

will halfonWill Halfon 6’2 Sr – Cherry Creek

Halfon has been a bit unheralded during his time at Cherry Creek. But this year the future walk-on at Drake  averaged over 20 ppg this season and had an epic 38 point performance in the Great 8.

blakeElijah Blake 6’1 Jr – Rangeview

Blake was the point guard for the winningest team in 5A this year. His strong ball handling, decision making and clutch shot making led the Raiders to a 26-1 record and the state semi finals.

FrvsHrBraxton Bertolette 6’2 Jr – Fossil Ridge

Bertolette was a prolific three point shooter, connecting on 97 shots which lead  5A. Bertolette also showed that he is one of the best ball handlers in the state as well.

sam mastenSam Masten – 6’2 So – Rock Canyon

Masten earned player of the year honors in the always tough Continental League. Masten owned the fourth quarters of most games. He could dictate the outcome of games with his ball handling, shot making ability, and was usually money from the free throw line.

tyreiTyrei Randall – 6’5 Sr – Rangeview

When Rangeview got on a scoring spurt it was usually keyed by Randall. Randall was excellent in Rangeviews attacking open court offense. Randall could finish with a dunk  or pull up behind the three point line and cash it.

Jervae RobinsonJervae Robinson – 6’2  Sr -Overland

Robinson was a key factor in the Trailblazers march back to the state title. Either scoring or handling the ball Robinson played very well. He was excellent attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line. He was also Overland’s biggest threat from the three point line.

colbeyColbey Ross – 6’1 Jr – Eaglecrest

Ross was outstanding this year. The junior led the state runner ups in nearly every statistical category. He was able to score nearly at will but was also a willing sharer of the ball.

ldLadarius Thomas – 6’1 Sr -Aurora Central

Thomas tallied some big game this year  with ten games over 7 assists and averaged over 18 ppg.  He dropped  a triple double and flirted with a couple of others.

David ThorntonDavid Thornton – 6’5 Sr – Cherokee Trail

There was only four games where the athletic senior didn’t grab more than 6 rebounds. Thornton was nearly unstoppable in the paint this season finishing nearly everything. Thornton was also capable of stepping out and hitting the occasional three pointer.  He was a match up nightmare for teams and a key reason why Cherokee Trail made it to the Great 8.

Clay VerkClay Verk – 6’8 Sr – ThunderRidge

Verk was one of the main reasons for the Grizzlies success this year. As ThunderRidge’s  leading scorer he did his work in the paint and was a space eating rebounder.
