The Colorado Hawks was the only Adidas Uprising Grassroots Basketball Program in Colorado this past club season. As such, they participated in the highly competitive Adidas Uprising tournament series. According to AdidasUprising.com “The tournament series includes three qualifying events and culminates with the top 32 teams competing in championship play at adidas Super 64, July 23-27 in Las Vegas. Qualifying tournaments include Dallas, April 25-27, Indianapolis, May 16-18 and Orlando, May 23-26. Teams competing in these qualifying events are ranked based on win/loss records and receive invitations to compete in the final based on those rankings.
The Hawks 17’s finished as one of the top 32 teams and competed in the adidas Super 64 this past weekend in Las Vegas. The Hawks tournament came to an end with a five point loss to EG10 in over time in the round of 16. The Hawks finished the Super 64 with a 2-3 record. Each of their losses came by less than five points and in each loss they had the chance to win the game in the final 1:30.
DU commit 6’6 Jake Holtzmann of Chaparral had the highest scoring output in a game for the Hawks with 29 points against Minnesota D1.
6’10 forward DeRon Davis from Overland had the second highest scoring game with 25 against Team Fast which he sat out most of the first half with foul issues.
16’s
The Hawks 16’s finished 2nd in pool play and then wrapped up the tournament with two losses to Texas D1 Ambassadors and Mass Rivals. 6’4 guard Alpha Diall0 (Denver West), 6’4 guard Tyrei Randall (Rangeview), and 6’0 Michael Ranson (Pueblo Central) each had their moments this weekend.
6’6 wing David Thornton of Cherokee Trail scored 33 points in a game against Florida Elite.
15’s
The 15’s finished 4th in pool play and ended the tournament with two losses in bracket play. Much like the other Hawks teams the 15’s were in most of the games but happened to be missing their big men. While the 15’s will need to find some size (either through maturity or adding players) for the next club season on the national circuit the future looks bright with guards like Braxton Bertolette (Fossil Ridge), Calvin Fugett, Jr.(George Washington), and David Simental Jr. (Pueblo West).
