The 5th Annual Herman Schayes Memorial Tournament
Welcome to the 5th annual Herman Schayes Memorial Tournament! We would like to thank Moffat County, The Pinnacle, and St. Mary’s for participating in this season’s opening week tourney at the Kent Denver School. Last year Moffat County was 21-6, champions of the Western Slope League, and an Elite 8 participant in the 3A state tourney. St. Mary’s was 19-5 and came in first in the Tri-Peaks League last season and advanced to the Sweet 16. The Pinnacle was 17-6 and came in first place in the Frontier League.
The tournament is named in memory of Coach Todd Schayes’ father, Herman Schayes, who passed away in August, 2008. Herman played basketball at Dewitt Clinton High School in the Bronx in the 1940’s and then went on to play college ball at Hofstra University and Colorado A & M (now Colorado State University). He started his professional basketball career in the mid-1950’s as a member of the Washington Generals and Texas Cowboys, the main opposition of the Harlem Globetrotters. Herman was fond of saying that he played over 2,000 professional games and never won a game! He went on to coach in various youth leagues in New York City, and was a staple at summer basketball camps, first with his brother at the Dolph Schayes All Star Camps in Lake George, New York, and later with his son Todd at the Kent Denver Summer Basketball Camps.
When he passed away, Herman left his wife of 46 years (Sandra), three children (Andrea, Todd, and Randi), and six grandchildren. Herman’s love of basketball and family, coupled with his desire to teach the game to young kids, has left a lasting impact on the Kent Denver basketball program.
In conjunction with the tournament, we are raising money to support the Prostate Cancer Foundation. A portion of the proceeds this weekend will go to the Foundation. For more information on the Prostate Cancer Foundation, you can go to www.pcf.org.
We would also like to thank our sponsors – Chipotle, Live Basil, and Stetson for their help in making this tournament a success.
