Denver, CO- The Montbello Warriors improved their record to 9-8 with a victory over the George Washington Patriots Saturday afternoon at Manual High School’s Thunderdome , 71-64.  Even though the stands were not as packed as they have been in the past for this DPL rivalry game, the fans witnessed a sophomore come of age; while a senior did all that he could to keep his team in the game. Warriors Sophomore Troy Green and Patriots Senior Jevon Taylor put on a show worthy of the Thunderdome.
Green scored the first two points of the game for Montbello and Taylor answered with a three pointer from the top of the key for the Patriots to set the tone for the first four minutes of play. As one team would score, the other answered right back to take the lead.  Washington Senior Jordon Davis nailed a three pointer to give the Patriots a 9-7 lead with a little more the four minutes remaining in the quarter. Then Montbello scored six unanswered points in the next 3 minutes capped off by a three pointer from Senior A.J. Hayes.   Taylor finally ended the scoring drought for the Patriots with a mid-range jumper from the right hand side of the floor.  Green scored his 10thpoint after an old fashion three-point play at the end of the quarter giving the Warriors a 19-11 lead.
Even though Taylor scored 11 of the Patriots 16 points in the second quarter, the Patriots went on another scoring drought of nearly three minutes half way through the second quarter. During that time the Warriors scored 8 points by three different players pushing the lead to 30-16.  Green and company controlled the defensive boards not allowing any second chance points for the Patriots.  Taylor broke the scoreless drought again with another three pointer from the right wing to cut the lead to 30-19. Davis and Taylor scored the final 5 points for the Patriots in the quarter to bring the Warrior lead to with in single digits, 35-27.
The Warriors were able to extend their lead by one point by the end of the third quarter, 49-40. Taylor scored 7 of the Patriots 13 points in the quarter while five different players scored for the Warriors including 5 points by Hays.
The scoring picked up in the fourth quarter for both teams. But it would come down to free throws for the Warriors. 15 of the Warriors 22 points in the quarter came from the free throw line as the Warriors were shooting the double bonus with about 6:00 left in the game. Junior Mann Preston lead the Patriots 24 point fourth quarter charge with 10 points including two very deep three pointers.  The Patriots charge proved to be futile as Montbello Senior Kedrick Stewart made 11 of 12 free throws for the Warriors thwarting any Patriot advance.
The Warriors Green took advantage of the Patriots lack of size to score 22 points and grab 8 rebounds.  Three other Warriors scored in double figures: Hayes scored 11, Stewart added 14 points while Junior Karamoko Cisse added 10 points and 8 rebounds.   Taylor lead the Patriots and all scorers with 28 points while shooting 6 of 10 from behind the three point line.  Two other Patriots scored in double figures: Davis added 13, while Preston chipped in 10 points.  The Thunderdome has not been a kind place to the Patriots as Montbello has won four in row at the neutral site.
